Lesson Study berasal dari bahasa Jepun, “jugyokenkyu” yang merupakan gabungan dua perkataan iaitu ‘jugyo’ bermaksud pelajaran, dan ‘kenkyu’ yang bererti pengkajian. Lesson Study yang telah mula bertapak di Jepun pada tahun 1960an merupakan penelitian atau pengkajian terhadap pelajaran.
Ia merupakan satu program pembangunan professional guru yang membentuk sebuah komuniti belajar secara konsisten dan sistematik dalam kalangan guru dalam usaha meningkatkan potensi diri individu guru dan anggota kumpulan.
Melalui kegiatan Lesson Study, guru-guru mengkaji pembelajaran melalui perancangan dan pemerhatian secara kolaboratif ke arah memperkembangkan kualiti pengajaran mereka supaya dapat memberikan impak yang positif terhadap aspek pembelajaran pelajar.
Bagaimana Berkembangnya Lesson Study?
Kajian VideoTIMSS (1995) melibatkan tiga buah negara: Amerika
Syarikat, Germany dan Jepun mendapati pengajaran dan pembelajaran matematik di Jepun amat berkualiti. Berdasarkan Kajian
Video TIMSS 1995: “Lesson Study telah banyak menyumbang kepada prestasi tinggi pengajaran guru dalam bilik darjah”
Bermula tahun 2000, terdapat minat dan perhatian dalam kalangan penyelidik dan pendidik terhadap Lesson
Study sebagai suatu amalan perkembangan profesional guru yang berkesan.
Dalam tempoh tiga tahun, kumpulan Lesson
Study (Lesson Study Groups) telah mula dan berkembang di 200 sekolah dalam 25 negeri di Amerika Syarikat. JICA
(Japan International Cooperation Agency) telah menaja dan memperkenalkan Lesson
Study kepada negara-negara Afrika dalam usaha meningkatkan sistem pendidikan. APEC
(Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) telah menaja projek “Innovations of
Mathematics Education through Lesson Study” dalam kalangan 21 negara APEC sejak 2006.
Perkembangan Lesson Study di Malaysia
Di Malaysia, Lesson Study bermula sebagai kajian penyelidikan di peringkat Sarjana /PhD pada tahun 2004. Agak lambat jika dibandingkan dengan beberapa negara lain sekitar kita seperti Thailand dan Singapura.
Ada empat ciri utama Lesson
Study iaitu;
(i) Lesson
Study ialah model peningkatan pengajaran guru berterusan jangka panjang,
(ii) Lesson Study berfokus kepada pembelajaran murid
(iii) Lesson
Study secara langsung bertumpu kepada peningkatan pengajaran dalam konteks
(iv) Lesson
Study bersifat kolaboratif
